IMPACT OF COVID 19 ON EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

The world has really changed over the past few months from what it used to be or how it used to be. Most sectors of the economy has been affected and almost everything has changed since the COVID19 spread began. Sports have had to go on without spectators, parks have been closed, businesses have had to be shut down and people have had to stay at home for a really long time. Even though all these and more guidelines have been put in place for our safety, it has also adversely impacted a number of sectors, one of which is the educational sector. While it also brought about new opportunities for students, teachers and schools in general, it has also brought about some serious challenges that has seriously affected the pattern and way of learning in the country.

First up, a quick reminder of what the COVID 19 or corona virus is. According to africacdc.org, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a communicable respiratory disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus that causes illness in humans. Scientists are still learning about the disease, and think that the virus began in animals. At some point, one or more humans acquired infection from an animal, and those infected humans began transmitting infection to other humans. The disease spreads from person to person through infected air droplets that are projected during sneezing or coughing. It can also be transmitted when humans have contact with hands or surfaces that contain the virus and touch their eyes, nose, or mouth with the contaminated hands.

Since first reported in 2019 in China, Corona Virus has spread worldwide with multiple cases reported everyday in many countries across the world. And as its still very much around, we’re still advised to followed the set guidelines, some of which include using a face masks, maintaining physical distancing, using alcohol based sanitizer, less touching of the eyes, nose or mouth and also staying at home.

In Nigeria, the spread of the virus started in early 2020 with just a few number of cases. In a matter of days, the cases began to go up and eventually there was a lockdown which lasted for a couple of weeks before eventually returning to what is now regarded as the new normal. One of the main aspects that really suffered not only in the country but around the world was education. As a result of the pandemic, schools were closed down together with a number of other things to help mitigate the spread and reduce the number of cases being discovered on a regular basis. This was a serious challenge as education is a virtal sector not only to the present condition but also the future of the country. The country’s “future leaders” were left with no other choice but to sit at home during these times.

Remote learning became an alternative in many countries around the world as it was even something that had been ongoing there before the pandemic and the students were already very knowledgeable about how to go about it and could almost have no problems in connecting with their learning environment even from the comfort of their home. The case was not the same in Nigeria as students, who were mostly accustomed to the traditional method of going to class and receiving lectures, were not fully equipped with skills at the time to be able to go about this virtual learning process. Poor planning was also the case as some schools could not adequately make plans to teach the students this process and for weeks, some students were not able to learn anything.

It can be said that COVID 19 had a positive and negative impact on the business world though it is worthy to note that even though new opportunities and ideas like virtual teaching and learning came up as a result of the pandemic, it was outweighed by the number of students who remained idle and couldn’t really attend these virtual classes or any form of lectures at all because of it. In the next sub heads, I’ll be discussing some of the major impacts of the COVID 19 pandemic on education in Nigeria

CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS

Like I’ve said, schools were shut down in the country and rightly so it was meant to help keep the students safe and also reduce the spread of the deadly virus. With schools closed down, there was only one thing that could happen. Students who were supposed to be in school at the time, had to be at home for a long time without any form of teaching and learning going on. Though some schools were able to proceed to engage the students in virtual classes and other useful activities to help them continue learning at home, others could not do this for several reasons, one of which was lack of resources to even go about it. With almost the entire year disrupted by the COVID 19 pandemic, students who didn’t have anything doing or attended schools where virtual classes didn’t take place would’ve spent a really long time not learning which could affect their level of education.

INTRODUCTION OF VIRTUAL LEARNING

As schools remained closed for a really long time, schools with adequate resources were able to go on and engage in virtual learning. The concept of virtual learning allows students to be able to learn and have classroom experience right from the comfort of their homes. Teachers, who would also be at the comfort of their homes, can teach students using different available platforms to still get students to be able to follow the syllabus and learn things even while at home. Of course, some students were able to participate in the virtual learning process while others couldn’t. This was mostly as a result of lack of proper devices to be able to go about it. Most of the online learning platforms can only be accessed using devices like smartphones, laptops or computers and students who didn’t have access to these devices surely couldn’t participate, hence hindering their education.

SLOWED LEARNING

As virtual learning was really popular and became quite a thing at the time, many people were able to go about it but there were still defects in the process. Students who were not accustomed to such methods of learning, especially from home, had to get used to the method and also learn school stuff at the same time. The process was obviously new to many students in the country as the main teaching and learning methods involved physical learning of going to school. Teachers had to take things slow and also ensure that students were following and could also use the platform very well. For students who had pending examinations at the time, one of which was West African Examination Council (WAEC) exam, had to take things very slow due to the new learning pattern.

LEARNING IN AN UNCOMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT

One of the main qualities of a school is to be conducive and comfortable for teaching and learning to go on. With the virtual learning, there was obviously no choice and students had to learn in any situation they found themselves regardless of if it was noisy or not even comfortable at all, they just had to find ways to work around it and get ready for the online classes.

RELIANCE ON VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT

This is infact, one of the things that was popular in almost all sectors of the economy. Every one had to, in one way or another, go about their normal activities using the virtual environment. Teachers who were not computer literate enough had to take up learning how to go about it and even training of the teachers took a while and that also affected the time frame of learning. Electricity problems also posed a threat to this concept. It is well known that the power supply in the country is not the best and it is even very bad in some areas. If students and teachers live in such areas, they won’t be able to participate or regularly be part of it.
