$200 million (72.1 billion Naira) was spent producing #BlackPanther and $150 million (54.8 billion Naira) which is 75% of the production cost was budget for promotion. The film, starring Chadwick Boseman and directed by Ryan Coogler, opens in more than 4,000 North American theaters this weekend and is projected to bring in about $160 million on its first weekend.
All these investments are possible because in Hollywood you reap what you sow as the US government has ensured Intellectual properties are well protected allowing the private sector to invest in solid distribution network. I strongly believe the piracy problem in Nigeria‘s Nollywood can be reduced drastically if a union or cartel (or whatever name that fits) of few individual or companies (about 5) can build cinemas is every city and town in Nigeria, they would be able to control piracy with a tight distribution network, economic & eventually acquired political strength, crushing any piracy business as soon as it emerges.
This system works perfectly in a society like Nigeria where law enforcement is week as the cartel are by necessity forced to deploy their resources to protect their interest. Nollywood will not attract big money until a strong & tight distribution network is established.
