The other day, we surveyed some of the top items that get sold out on our site and found that people buy laptops a lot. But most of these people usually complain about their laptop battery.

It could be a result of the heavy workload that they do with their laptops. So, they are curious to know things they can do to increase their laptop battery life.

Some people describe their laptop as their baby, and they are not wrong. The same way you would care for a child can also be how you would care for your laptop. If you have been looking for tips on things to do that lead to increased laptop battery life, you should continue reading this piece.

At the end of this article, you’ll be more conscious of your practices regarding your laptop. You will also know ways to extend your laptop’s battery life.

How To Extend Your Laptop’s Battery Life

Dealing with a laptop may be tricky, especially when you do a lot of work on it. However, there are some things you can do to increase your laptop’s battery life.

In no particular order, below are some helpful practices:

1. Reduce screen brightness: Why is your laptop’s brightness at the highest? Are you trying to damage your eyes? No matter the time of the day, there is no reason why your screen brightness should be at the highest.

Yes, some people may complain that they cannot see well if the screen brightness is dim. However, that doesn’t mean it should be increased to the highest. Instead, you should find a middle balance to set the screen brightness.

One would agree that there is a high level of discomfort you would experience when you have your laptop’s screen brightness on the highest. In addition, it further leads to damaging your eyes. It is one of the reasons why experts advocate that people shouldn’t always leave their eyes bare while looking at a laptop screen, especially for long hours.

Not only does using your screen on highest affect eyesight, but it also drains your laptop battery. If you did not know, your battery supports your screen brightness, which applies to all devices and gadgets. So, the higher your screen brightness, the faster your laptop battery drains.
If you have been habitually using your screen brightness on the highest, it’s time to stop this practice.

2. Don’t use a laptop when charging: Some people are in the habit of using their laptops while charging. Why!? Why are you doing this? You need to pick a struggle! Do you want to use your computer, or do you want it to charge?

There is no reason why you should be using your laptop while it is charging. By doing this, you are affecting the rate at which it charges. You would notice that your computer would take longer to charge. It happens because instead of allowing the laptop to charge, you exert its power since you are also using it simultaneously.

It is best to remember that your laptop isn’t human, and you have to treat it accordingly. Yes, you may say that you can multitask while using a laptop, and humans are also great at multitasking. However, your laptop is a device, and you need to allow it to focus on charging.

Using a laptop while it charges affects its battery life, and you would notice that your laptop’s battery begins to drain faster than usual. If your computer is low, allow it to charge fully before you use it again. It is best not to use a laptop while it is plugged in so you can get its best performance.

3. Charge your laptop before it dies: It has become a habit for many people that they wouldn’t plug in their computer until it dies. Yes, you should not charge your laptop and use it. However, you should also not leave your computer to die until you charge it.

If you notice that your laptop is running low, the ideal thing is to plug it in before it dies. However, even if you are working, you should pause what you were doing and allow the laptop to charge before you continue using it. If you make it a habit of letting your laptop die before you charge it, it begins to affect your laptop’s battery life.

Recall how we said that you should treat your laptop like a child. Typically, you wouldn’t leave your child to roll in pain before providing food. Similarly, charging your computer acts as food for the laptop. Thus, the laptop shouldn’t die before you charge it.

If you allow your laptop to get used to this negative pattern, it will result in issues for you as the laptop battery will weaken and start going off earlier than expected. The goal is to increase your laptop’s battery life and not kill it. Therefore, always plug in your battery before it dies.

4. Use power saving mode: As the name implies, you can tell that using this feature helps extend your laptop’s battery life. We know that many devices come with a power saving mode. It is a feature that comes with most phones and laptops to help users increase battery life.

The idea of this feature is that it limits certain things. These are things that usually use more battery. Therefore, helping you converse the amount of battery that would have been used.
For example, when you switch on the power saving mode, your screen goes off after seconds as it wouldn’t stay on for long to extend the battery life. In addition, it also shuts down all applications that may be using the battery in the background. And it also automatically reduces the screen brightness of the device. As we earlier mentioned, using your screen brightness at the highest could drain the battery, so power saving mode helps to prevent it. And it would also restrict the applications you can use.

It is one of the powerful features of any device as it allows you to focus on what you need to do and converse your battery until you can charge. You need to start utilizing this feature, if you’ve not started using it.

5. Turn off the laptop when not in use: Why do you have your computer running even when you are not using it? As much as your laptop may not be human, it would be best if you treated it with care. And, leaving it running when not in use is not one of the ways to care for a laptop.

We often wonder who started the practice and culture of leaving a laptop running when not in use. But unfortunately, when you do this, it continues to drain the laptop’s battery and harms it. It may even affect the motherboard and spoil your computer eventually.

As humans, we often need to sleep. In the same way, your laptop also needs to rest. So, it is best to put your computer off when you are not using it.
This way, you can allow the laptop to cool down, pending when you want to use it again and save the battery life. Can a human survive for two weeks without sleep? Of course, you know how slow you would be when you are sleep deprived, even if it is for two days. Therefore, you shouldn’t put your laptop through such torture if you want to get the best out of it.

6. Don’t allow your laptop to overheat: Many people, especially those who do heavy work with their computers, would concur that laptops tend to heat up fast, especially when there is no airflow underneath. Some people say it’s normal for this to happen and often ignore it. However, most people don’t know that overheating is harmful to the laptop.

When using a laptop, it is always best to place it in a place that allows for adequate airflow. This way, the computer wouldn’t overheat during usage. So, for those who put their laptop on the bed while using it, that is a wrong practice.

When your laptop begins to overheat, it drains the battery faster, and you will see that your laptop’s battery wouldn’t last as it usually does. The lifespan of your computer gets shorter the more it overheats. So, if you want to increase your laptop’s battery life, you should ensure adequate airflow during usage.

In addition, overheating on the laptop can also affect the motherboard and make the laptop crash. But, of course, we know that you spent a good amount of money on getting the computer, and you wouldn’t want it to crash. Therefore, be mindful of airflow during usage.

7. Disconnect laptop when charged: We often come across different character traits concerning laptop users, some of which are laughable. A particular group doesn’t disconnect their laptop even when it is charged. You would see a person leave their computer plugged in even it charged 100% about an hour ago. What more do you want? Do you want the battery to reach 300%?

A typical battery should charge 100% and wouldn’t go beyond that. So, there is no need to leave the laptop charging even when it is full. But, when you do this, it affects the battery life. As power keeps going into the battery, it affects and weakens the battery.

Once you notice your laptop battery is full, you should disconnect it. The only time you should plug it back in is when you see that the battery is going low again. All these may seem like small practices, and it is easy to overlook them. However, they help protect your laptop’s battery and extend its lifespan.

Those in the habit of leaving a laptop to charge even when it has reached 100% should unlearn it, as it isn’t a healthy practice for the computer.

8. Don’t leave apps or programs running when not in use: It is common to see people who have various apps and programs running on their laptops. It could be that these are apps and programs that they use frequently. Therefore, they leave these apps and programs running so that they can easily access them when the need arises.

The logic behind this is understandable. However, it doesn’t mean it is a fair practice. Leaving apps and programs running on your laptop takes up more battery and affects the laptop’s battery life.
For example, you have all the apps and programs you would usually frequent running on your laptop. But at that moment, all you need is Microsoft word. However, since everything is running, it takes a lot of battery, and your battery wouldn’t last long.

It may be challenging, but you need to learn to shut down applications and programs you do not need if you want to extend your laptop’s battery life. Yes, all humans love ease, and having these things running would be easier than always going to boot them when you need them. But you should also think of your battery life and put that into consideration in the practices that you do.

9. Stick to using the original charger: Nothing charges a device faster and better than its original charger. If you have ever had to change your laptop charger before, you would agree that the new charge you got did not charge the laptop as well as its original charger did.

Therefore, we always advise people to use their original chargers to charge their laptops. And it is best if you are careful with the usage of such a charger as that is what can help your computer. Using different chargers for your laptop affects the battery’s health and may lead to some damage.

10. Switch off Wi-Fi: It is common for one to be connected to the internet for one reason or the other when using their laptop. However, that Wi-Fi connection could also be draining your battery.

If you compare your laptop when connected to the internet and when it’s not, you would see that it drains more battery when connected to the internet. Thus, it’s best to disconnect from the Wi-Fi if you do not need to be connected to the internet at the moment. It should be in the back of your mind that you are looking for the best way to save your laptop’s battery, and this is a practice that would help.

Below are some of the frequent questions we get about laptops and increasing battery life:

Why is my laptop battery draining so fast?
Your laptop battery may be draining fast because of the apps and programs you have running in the background or the brightness of your screen. There are many reasons why your laptop battery is draining so fast, and these are some of them.

Is it ok to use a laptop while charging?
No, using a laptop while charging is not ok, as you would be overworking the battery. It is best to allow your computer to charge before you use it.

  5. Long-Term Financial Impact: Extended or severe disruptions to the supply chain may have a long-term effect on the financial performance of the business, limiting its capacity to produce revenue and sustain long-term profitability. Stock performance and investor confidence may potentially be impacted by this.
  6. Working Capital Restraints: In order to minimize disruptions caused by supply chain disruptions, the business may need to store excess inventory or pay in advance for faster transportation. Money that may have been spent for other company endeavors is diverted by this.
  7. Business Continuity Costs: In order to avoid or lessen supply chain interruptions, businesses may need to make investments in business continuity and risk management techniques. These costs can have an adverse effect on their bottom line.
